Why Sump Pumps Fail in Barrie Basements, and How to Stop It

Here is the uncomfortable thing about flooded basements in Simcoe County: most of the homes we pump out had a sump pump, and most of those pumps were in working order when we tested them afterward. The pump was not broken. It simply was not running during the two hours that mattered.
Barrie sits on heavy clay with a high water table, and the spring melt combined with a fast rain event is the worst case. Groundwater rises quicker than the soil can take it, the pit fills in minutes rather than hours, and any weakness in the system shows up all at once. Below are the five ways we see sump systems fail, ordered by how often we find them.
1. The Power Goes Out With the Storm
This is the big one, and it is worth understanding why it is so common. The same storm that dumps the water is the storm that takes down the hydro line. Your pump is fine. Your pit is filling. There is simply no electricity to run the motor.
A standard sump pump does nothing at all without power. If your basement is finished, or if it holds a furnace, a water heater and anything you care about, a battery backup pump is not a luxury, it is the entire point of the system. A backup unit sits slightly higher in the same pit, runs off a deep-cycle battery, and will typically clear water for six to twelve hours of intermittent cycling. Water-powered backups are another option for homes on municipal supply, using line pressure instead of a battery, with no runtime limit at all.
If you take one thing from this article: a sump pump without a backup is a single point of failure on the exact night you need it most.
2. The Check Valve Is Missing or Failed
The check valve is a small one-way flap in the discharge pipe above the pump. When the pump shuts off, it stops the column of water sitting in that vertical pipe from draining straight back into the pit.
Without a working check valve, every cycle dumps some of that water back where it came from, the float rises again, and the pump restarts. We have seen pumps short-cycling every twenty seconds this way. The pit never really empties, the motor runs hot, and the pump burns out years early, usually in the middle of the wet season when it is working hardest. A check valve costs very little and is one of the cheapest pieces of insurance in your basement.
3. The Float Switch Jams
Mechanical float switches fail more often than motors do. The float catches on the pit wall, on the discharge pipe, or on a stray piece of debris, and either sticks down so the pump never starts, or sticks up so the pump runs dry until the motor cooks.
This is why we tell homeowners to test the pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pit rather than by lifting the float with a hand. Lifting the float proves the motor runs. Filling the pit proves the whole system works the way it will on a real night. Do this twice a year, in early spring and in late autumn.
4. The Discharge Line Freezes or Clogs
In Barrie this one is seasonal and it is brutal. The pump runs during a February thaw, pushes water out to a discharge line that is buried in snow or ends in a frozen puddle, and the line ices over. The pump then runs against a solid plug, overheats and trips.
Make sure the discharge exits well away from the foundation, ideally three metres or more, that it slopes continuously so nothing sits in the pipe, and that the outlet is clear of snow through winter. Some homes benefit from a freeze-relief fitting that gives the water somewhere to escape if the main line ices up.
5. The Pump Is Simply Old
Sump pumps are consumables. Seven to ten years is a realistic service life, and a pump that has run hard through wet springs will land at the shorter end. There is rarely a warning. It works, and then one day the motor hums and nothing moves.
If you do not know how old your pump is, assume it is older than you would like. Replacing a pump on a dry Tuesday costs a fraction of what a flooded basement costs on a wet Saturday.
A Ten Minute Check You Can Do Today
Lift the lid and look for debris in the pit. Pour in a five gallon bucket of water and watch the pump start, clear the pit and shut off cleanly, with no rapid restart. Follow the discharge pipe outside and confirm it runs clear and away from the house. Check that the pump is on its own outlet, not sharing a circuit with a freezer or a dehumidifier that could trip it. Finally, if there is no backup, decide whether what is stored down there is worth the cost of one.
